Too many times people feel powerless to make changes in this world. This is because they have forgotten the three most important words in our government, We the People. This lesson is designed to help students understand that they have a voice and that they can use this voice to help push for change. They may not choose to exercise this voice but at least they will know they have the choice. In this unit they will need to identify a problem or concern, research the situation, and then present their findings and opinion in a letter to the editor of a local newspaper, a letter to a local or federal official, or an oral presentation that could be presented to a community forum (i.e. city council, school board, or PTSA meeting). An important 21st century skill is Civic literacy and an ability to interact with community and government.
