Modeling Linear Relationships in the Classroom

Linear relationships and functions are modeled using scatter plots and linear regression (line of best fit) in order to determine a function that best describes the data. Data is obtained in the classroom by students, in this case they will determine the linear relationship between shoe size and height. Graphing software is used in order to facilitate linear regression and graphing, ultimately students will use the determined linear function to predict the height or shoe size of their teacher (or any other person). After analyzing the data, and noting observed deviations from linearity, students write a short report including their data analysis, graph and application of their function as a summative assessment.
