Smart Cities and the Role of Information Communication Technology

2015

The Smart Cities lesson will introduce students to a variety of ways in which a city can use technology to collect and analyze data. This data can then be used across a variety of city domains in order to adapt and adjust a variety of resources and utilities to increase efficiency, productivity, social welfare and reduce human impact on natural systems. After students have sufficient background, they will be sent on a scavenger hunt (outside of school hours) to identify areas in which their city has implemented ICT (information communication technologies), adaptive technologies or other "smart" technologies to improve their city. Students will then be expected to research their observations and create a presentation for the class with a critique of what they found and future improvements and applications.
