The goal of this ETP is to engage students in a hands-on engineering experience. The students will explore the concept of ‘Thin Film Nanoparticles’ that form conductive surfaces in which the current can be measured and the resistance can be calculated.
The Markland research group at Stanford University develops simulation approaches to modelling chemical systems. When experimental techniques are insufficient for observing atomic-level phenomena, scientists use advanced computer simulations to model complex systems.
The bulk properties of a material depend heavily on the microscopic structure of that material.
Students will compare the strengths of oxidizing and reducing agents, and determine resistance to different etching solutions. Students will work in small groups, developing laboratory skills while conducting a lab on electroplating.
When my students think about mechanical engineering they probably envision car designs, robots, or helicopters: however, the structures engineered by researchers in my summer fellowship are rarely larger than a grain of sand.
