The Payne Paleobiology Lab at Stanford University focuses on extinction risks in marine animals.
This lesson uses a historical context to provide a foundational, scientific basis of Earth’s history for high school students. Students will conduct individual internet research to learn when and under what circumstances events in Earth’s history took place.
Students will analyze modern fossil records of four different species of a group of organisms called foraminifera, which are single celled protists with shells (tests). All of the specimens were collected from the Santa Monica Basin in the Pacific Ocean just off of Santa Monica, California.
