Green Infrastructure

During my fellowship at the SFPUC, I learned about the different pillars of the agency: water, power, and sewer. In an effort to put less stress on San Francisco’s aging sewer system, San Francisco building code mandates that green infrastructure design elements be included in any new major construction projects. My AP Environmental Science students will learn about green infrastructure by analyzing a site to identify key characteristic features. Students will be split into groups and assigned a block of the Galileo HS campus to redesign. In the redesign, students will need to include green infrastructure to decrease the amount of stormwater runoff into the sewer system and submit a written proposal to justify their choices.
