This educational transfer plan is a high school physics laboratory suitable for students with knowledge of right angle trigonometry. At the conclusion of this laboratory students will be able to (SWBAT), calculate the percent difference in the angle of total internal reflection for light traveling from water to air versus light traveling from gelatin to air .Students will also experimentally find the index of refraction of both the air and the gelatin layers. The impetus for creating this laboratory came from a summer Ignited Fellowship spent at Meta helping to do research and development centered around the lens coatings on the consumer electronics products such as the Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, Portal, and Ray Bans Stories. These consumer products contain optical systems which consist of different lenses and transparent films. It is important to understand the optical index of refraction of different materials and select thin-film anti-reflective coatings to minimize the reflection of light in these aforementioned products. Meta is also using light tubes to look at optical properties of materials such as transmittance, absorbance, and reflectance. The light tubes employ the concept of total internal reflection, which will be studied in this laboratory.
