There are multitudes of different moving parts in the software and technology industry. At Lockheed Martin Space Systems, teams of various hardware, software, and systems engineers need to align their tasks and project timelines in order to plan, build, test, and launch satellites into space for critical missions such as 1) Missile Warning, 2) Missile Defense, 3) Battlespace Awareness, and 4) Technical Intelligence. Each team is responsible for different components or functionalities of the satellite or ground stations, where data from space is received, processed, and possibly sent out again. Each part must work on its own, but must also integrate smoothly with others. This requires painstaking management, consistent communication, and detailed project documentation across all groups involved.
The goal of this Educational Transfer Plan is to foster and develop communication, collaboration, and documentation skills in computer science students. Students will model Agile development processes using physical (post-its, whiteboard, cork board) and digital (Google Suite) platforms. They will work together using Agile to assign tasks, share workload, and complete a programming project that requires referencing and updating existing documentation.
