Biomimicry is innovation designed by nature. It is a fast growing field that allows engineers, architects, pharmacists, biotechnologists, transportation planners, telecommunication experts, etc., to look into the biological world for solutions to common design problems. The rationale is that natural selection has evolved complex designs which have stood the test of time and extinction. Looking to nature for design-inspiration is nothing new. Leonardo da Vinci attempted to create a human-powered flying machine after observing a variety of flying animals. In the last century, a Swiss engineer created Velcro after drawing inspiration from the tenacious burrs which stuck to his hunting jacket and his dog’s coat after a walk through vegetation.
