How do we attract students to the field of science? What is it that is going to draw them into the field and keep them there? I believe that the answer to this question can be found by talking to scientists themselves. If our students find out that scientists consist of many different types of people that have many different interests, they might consider becoming one. I have developed a lesson that will allow me to show my students that this is true.
They will examine scientist interviews in small groups and determine similarities. The small groups will eventually come together into a class discussion. I will also use the interviews to link Chemistry to Material Science and Material Engineering and will integrate parts of material science into lessons throughout the year. Students will be asked to summarize what they have learned.
My interviews came from Lockheed Martin. However any company could be used for the same lesson.
