In my research at UC-Berkeley's Water Center, I am conducting on-line research on water saving appliances and fixtures. Combining this data-mining research process with the content of water conservation, this lesson will teach my students the critical 21st century skills for effective on-line research, while providing them information on water use, and motivation to conserve water in their own lives.
WikiWaterWorkIt will teach my students to find, evaluate, and harvest data from on-line sources, and to cite those sources appropriately. Students will employ these skills in a real-world assessment, by finding and adding quantitative data to existing Wikipedia pages, properly citing their sources there.
To enhance student engagement and transfer the topical knowledge I am gaining, WikiWaterWorkIt focuses on water conservation metrics. Students will reflect on their use of water, research a water-related issue of interest to them, and share what they learn globally on Wikipedia.
