What does clean water have to do with math? This ETP is part of an inquiry-based unit that aims to engage students in using math, science, and engineering skills in a critical and creative way.
This lesson helps students develop a growth mindset in math by exploring multiple ways to solve problems.
Students will use the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) writing framework to tackle complex word problems in math, connecting reading, computation, and conceptual understanding to strengthen critical thinking and real-world problem-solving skills.
The Mitch Lab at Stanford researches organic chemical reaction pathways involved in treating water, especially disinfection byproducts (DBPs), which result from reactions between disinfectants (usually chlorine) and dissolved organic matter.
Millennials need to see and experience the connection between education and how it will benefit them in their adult lives directly. Merely stating that education is important or that it will help them get good paying, challenging jobs instead of menial, low paid work does not resonate with them.
