Equations and Profit

Nicholas Comendant
Cisco Systems
2019

This is a two-day math lesson where students will play the role of Cisco’s CFO and decide whether building a new campus makes financial sense for the company. Students will need to analyze the information provided to them, exploring mathematical concepts such as equations, dependent and independent variables, order of operations, and graphing. As students have not yet been introduced to the concept of dependent and independent variables, the main objective will be being able to identify and manipulate these variables in contextual situations. Furthermore, students will be expected to create a table and graph showing the relationship between the variables. Throughout the lesson students will have many opportunities to share their thinking with the class and their partner.
