This ETP will focus on students learning about the statistics of Cardiovascular Disease (or Heart Disease), which is the leading global cause of death. They will be interpreting real statistical data about Cardiovascular Disease looking at different factors, like age, race, and ethnicity.
Unclogging Artery is an engineering project that challenges students to develop a device to treat coronary heart disease. Students will follow the design process and record their actions and reflections in an Engineering Notebook.
Biotechnology is a broad unit in Biology which has the opportunity to captivate students with hands on activities and real world connections as well as allow students to discover new career opportunities in this new trench in 21st century science.
Students will build a simple spectrometer, and test it to determine the optimal angle for the CD to be placed. They will document both their process and their findings, and share their results with the class in a multimedia presentation.
Students and teachers often view laboratory investigations as exercises in following directions, which grossly misrepresents the scientific process. Experimentation involves careful and methodological application of scientific principles, in which peers critique communicated results.
Students are often asked to understand complicated, abstract, academic language, (such as: a consequence of, despite the fact that, clearly demonstrates) and are asked to use it often on their assignments and tests.
The goal of this ETP is to introduce analytical techniques used in actual lab work to the students. It introduces the use Beer’s Law as a way to link absorbance of light to concentration.
