Into The Blue Investigation is a hands-on collaborative lab activity where students use their knowledge of chemistry and the scientific method to determine the reactants, products and type of a chemical reaction.
Students will understand how heat energy can flow from hot to cold while transforming from one form to another.
This active stem learning experiment aims to provide a set of advanced laboratory skills to meet the 21st century technology standard to the students. This experiment asks the students to synthesize and quantify a compound that has real application in the medicinal world.
Students will design a method to promote heat loss from an aluminum can full of hot water and test modifications to their design. Modelled on removing excess heat from electronic components, the lab tests different methods of removing heat and meets the NGSS engineering standards.
This lesson is constructed to help students see the importance of physical, chemical and biological attributes in the removal of contaminants from the environment. Students will design, construct and run experiments on the filtration of a known pollutant, nitrate, from water.
Students and teachers often view laboratory investigations as exercises in following directions, which grossly misrepresents the scientific process. Experimentation involves careful and methodological application of scientific principles, in which peers critique communicated results.
NGSS uses constructivist theory and educational research to propose a teaching paradigm to promote ways of thinking, science practices, as well as science content through an inquiry process.
My school uses blended learning and the SunBay unit implemented and exemplified by this ETP is a blended learning unit. This SunBay software simulation unit will be the basis for my class’ entire unit on Rates, Ratios and Proportions. It will replace the unit used cover this topic last year.
