In this lesson students will apply knowledge of wave interference, light, refraction, reflection, transmission and conservation of energy in order to understand principles of thin film interference as they are applied in the development of anti-reflective coating for optical devices.
Following an introductory lesson on constructive and destructive interference and Young’s double slit experiment, students will be introduced to the history, design, and function of a Michelson interferometer.
The objective of this lesson is for the students to utilize content they have learned in my physics class to complete an engineering challenge. Students must angle mirrors appropriately in order to direct a laser beam onto a target.
