Solar energy can be part of a mixture of renewable energy sources used to meet the need for electricity. Engineers have developed technologies to convert solar energy to electrical power efficiently using photovoltaic cells (also called solar cells).
Students of general physics II or higher will work in teams to apply a solar battery charger circuit to charge using a solar panel. Students will find the maximum efficiency of the solar panel.
A Solar Array is the main component of a PV system that requires a precise design, and is constructed based on the needs of a PV system. The energy needed to operate, charge or maintain a system is determined by the operational requirements and capacity of the system and Solar Array.
In this activity, students will learn that energy changes from one form to another, and that the total amount of energy in a closed system remains constant.
