Students will understand how heat energy can flow from hot to cold while transforming from one form to another.
Students recommend the best material for 7-11 store’s cup -- one that keeps hot beverages hot, and cold beverages cold. Using a computer model, students test different cup materials and gather evidence to support their recommendation.
This activity will extend student knowledge of various nonrenewable and renewable energy sources into a series of stoichiometric calculation sets.
Students will design a method to promote heat loss from an aluminum can full of hot water and test modifications to their design. Modelled on removing excess heat from electronic components, the lab tests different methods of removing heat and meets the NGSS engineering standards.
When my students think about mechanical engineering they probably envision car designs, robots, or helicopters: however, the structures engineered by researchers in my summer fellowship are rarely larger than a grain of sand.
