Starting as early as kindergarten, students create visual content to demonstrate their learning, yet they are usually not taught how to make the content visually appealing and easy to understand. Design with C.A.R.P. is a lesson appropriate for grades 2-8 in which students learn and apply four design principles: contrast, alignment, repetition, and proximity (CARP) to promote the communication of ideas. Throughout the lesson, students apply their learning to authentic work samples. In teams, students use a quality rubric to self-evaluate and provide peer feedback. The real-life skills students will develop during this lesson include collaboration and effective communication of ideas. Both skills are used in most industries. After collaborating on a shared Google slide, students will share their constructive feedback in live Breakout Rooms during Zoom video meetings. Google Hangouts chat will provide a place for team members to communicate outside of Zoom. Note- This ETP will focus on learning and applying design principles. Future lessons focus on collaboratively creating a website home page and adding a content page that effectively communicates and showcases work on topics of inclusion, diversity, equity, activism, or social justice.
