Using evidence from informational texts and examples from companies such as MAAS Energy, Divert, Tracy Renewables, and Hilmar Cheese, students will brainstorm innovative ways to reduce food waste and conserve resources at school.
Students will use the websites for companies that are involved in our local circular bioeconomy in order to identify the careers, skills, and values of that company.
This integrated, full-day curriculum transforms a 7th/8th-grade math class into a real-world environmental data firm. Moving away from abstract word problems, students act as Sustainability Data Analysts to tackle California’s real-world food waste crisis.
Students will determine how long it would take to pay off a biodigester using varying parameters such as the price of methane, capital cost of the equipment, maintenance costs, government subsidies, and speed of methane creation.
During this lesson, I will introduce the 13 CTE pathways they can take in high school and discuss how the industries operate together to create a successful and sustainable business, such as Hillmar.
