My school spends half its professional development (PD) hours in self-selected committees. I lead a committee focused on practitioner research -- the Cycle of Inquiry Committee. This committee meets twice a month, for a total of two hours, and we have four release days during the school year.
English Language Learners (ELL) face a double curricular load in a math classroom. Deciphering a math text, while attempting to solve a difficult math concept can be frightening and frustrating. Consequently, many ELL students feel anxious and thus, become passive learners in a math classroom.
This lab (lesson) will allow students to gain a modeled laboratory experience of how surface antigens (proteins)on blood cells are used to identify the type of blood we (humans) have. I will set-up the lab as CSI crime scene where students solve who the murderer is based on “blood” evidence.

Students recommend the best material for 7-11 store’s cup -- one that keeps hot beverages hot, and cold beverages cold. Using a computer model, students test different cup materials and gather evidence to support their recommendation.
This is a two-day Makerspace lesson in which students work in teams to create JavaScript apps using snippets of code. Using a custom-designed app, each student will be given random snippets of code to choose from.
