All living things need to obtain materials in order to stay alive. Chemotaxis is the directed movement towards or away from a chemical stimulus. In many cases, chemotaxis is a matter of life or death, so sensing and acting on feedback from the environment is a crucial life function.

Coral bleaching research is at the heart of my fellowship in the Pringle Lab at Stanford, where they study the symbiosis between reef-building corals and dinoflagellate algae. This symbiosis is crucial to the survival of coral reefs.

The goal of this ETP is to introduce and practice the engineering design process in a fun and high interest manner: by designing a balloon “rocket” that uses a straw and various types of string to travel a distance in the fastest possible time.
This lesson is designed to drop into the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) course on product design called Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) but it is suitable for any CAD class or engineering design curriculum.
