This ETP adapts Amazon’s PRFAQ product development process to classroom learning, helping students start with a clear vision of their project, identify challenges, and plan solutions.
This lesson focuses on the engineering design process, linking it to the research conducted at the Shaqfeh lab at Stanford University, which is investigating the properties of fluids, specifically how they apply to de-wetting surfaces, and designing a new fluid for specific purposes.
One of the core ideas of material science is that structure dictates function. The macroscopic properties which arise from a material’s molecular composition aid in determining its potential applications.
The goal of this ETP is to see how Amazonian principles can be applied in the classroom to reinvent the laboratory design process with the help of collaboration. In the science classroom, laboratory procedures are generally provided for students.
Within the field of psychology, there are different approaches. This project is based on two psychological approaches, research psychology and social psychology. Students will be placed in groups. Groups will design and develop an invention to help their local community.
By engaging in a real engineering design challenge, students will be able to experience a high-stakes competition to solve their challenge through troubleshooting.
Students are introduced to the project and given time to brainstorm ideas for their apps. During this lesson, students will begin creating an app using Systems Thinking Habits, creating paper prototypes, and participating in a Gallery Walk to provide feedback and user testing to other groups.
